Collage of Curiosities No. 26
July 2025
The last few days the air has sweetened. Heat intensifying a perfume I couldn’t identify until it fell into my periphery. Infinite cream colored blossoms arch out from the heart of our palm trees. Incredibly, the bees seem not to have noticed the awaiting feast but it’s ripe and ready for them. They’re taking their time, as is the way of summer.
Similarly, my ideas are flowing but their fruits are slow to form. Like the bees that will soon flock to the palms, I find myself coming and going from the studio all day making small notes, looking at work I completed earlier, and just sitting in the space,
a pencil in hand, ready to make marks that eventually manifest into the forms of flowers I’ve snipped from the garden or forms of familiar animals.
I feel unhurried. Like I’m tapping into an energy shared by many other artists before myself. The creating is not confined only to certain work hours, though I do keep them, but spilling over into other areas of my day with the exuberance of hastily poured Champagne. It’s, dare I say it, a tad bohemian even. An easeful rhythm that I fall into a few times of the year and I try to soak it up, like that precious puddle of Champagne.
